A Farmer's Response to Stop GM Alfalfa
by Steve Bemis, Esq. and Michigan Hay Farmer
In case the government doesn't get the details, let me say it clearly: I am adamantly opposed to GM-alfalfa in any form, at any time, anywhere in the world.
AS AN ALFALFA FARMER, I do not want to face the well-proven Gestapo tactics of certain seed patent-holders in enforcing their "rights" to God-given seeds of the earth. I will NEVER plant their seeds, yet it is predictable with 100% certainty that their seeds' genes would contaminate my fields, and the real possibility exists that they will then sue or threaten to sue me for "infringement." I will fight them to my dying breath.
AS A HUMAN CONSUMER OF FOOD (AND SPEAKING FOR ALL FELLOW CREATURES NON- HUMAN, AND FOR THE SOIL ITSELF), I am incensed that seed companies, in collusion with the US Government, have enrolled me unwillingly in a giant uncontrolled experiment in modifying the ecosystem and the very food I eat. Soy, corn and cotton are already lost causes and over the top. Contamination of the most basic food of ruminants is UNACCEPTABLE. Specifically, I get my meat and milk from farmers to whom I sell my alfalfa hay. If my hay becomes contaminated with GM alfalfa, which it assuredly will if GM alfalfa is let loose in the world, I will end up eating even more of this crap.
I DO NOT CONSENT TO BECOME A PART OF FURTHER EXPERIMENTS WITH MY FOOD AND THE VERY EARTH UPON WHICH I STAND. INSTEAD OF APPROVING GM ALFALFA, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD REQUIRE LABELING OF ALL FOOD FOR GM CONTENT AND IMPOSE "CRADLE TO GRAVE" LIABILITY.
There is no earthly reason consumers cannot have the information with which to make informed choices about what food to eat. On the model of the Superfund, in environmental cases, make the liability for propagation of this pollutant into the environment "cradle to grave." This kind of liability has helped to clean up messes years later that well-meaning chemical companies caused when they thought that dioxin, or PCB's, or chlorinated solvents, or hexavalent chrome, or (name your poison), were just peachy-dandy things to spread around. Chemical companies surely understand this kind of liability; indeed, avoiding it is probably a large part of why they morphed into seed companies. Let's remind them that what goes around, ought to come around. I don't know what else to say. If this gene experiment is let loose in the world, may the government officials who read the protests and approve its introduction notwithstanding, live long enough to watch their children and grandchildren (if indeed our children can reproduce after eating these chemicals) suffer from the consequences of their decision. For those that can't understand these words, you might call it a curse. The curse of GM food.
