In a shakeup of U.S. Senate leadership today, Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) replaces the late Senator Ted Kennedy as chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) will replace Harkin as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
An Associated Press article describes Sen. Lincoln as a more moderate Democrat but staunch supporter of government farm subsidies.
Following today's announcement, National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson made the following statement:
"I congratulate and welcome Senator Lincoln to her new role as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Senator Lincoln has been a steadfast advocate for America's family farmers, ranchers and rural communities. While we face many challenges, I am confident she will continue her efforts to preserve and protect the interests of rural America. I look forward to working with Senator Lincoln to advance NFU's priorities.
"I thank Senator Harkin for his relentless leadership as Agriculture Committee Chairman and wish him the best in his new position as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee."
