Joel Salatin (Ellen Martin/Heinz Awards)

Virginia food star Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm just got $100,000 richer. The Shenandoah Valley farmer and author, best known by foodies as a grow-it-local hero in Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma," is one of 10 winners of the Heinz Award announced Tuesday. This year, the annual prize -- established by Teresa Heinz Kerry -- is honoring folks doing good things for the environment. Salatin's central Virginia operation is all about alternative, eco-friendly farming. Plans for the money? "It will all be spent locally," he told us.
